It is all very well to be able to write books, but can you wiggle your ears?

Faffing is the best way to learn dialogue.

I was just playing Kate Rusby on the radio. Now, I’m not great with poetry. Not great with reading it. Not great with writing it. I like lyrics though. Especially when they capture something unusual, and especially when they manage to find a  rhythm and accent and syncopation that is peculiarly beautiful.

If you’re a writer, capturing those patterns of speech and language is essential in creating believable dialogue. The only way to learn how to really write good conversation is to listen to how people really speak, or sing, their words. Find people who have compelling voices. Record them. Then transcribe them. Write down what they said. Not what you think they said, but what they actually said.

Sounds like a faff? Well, man up and get on with it. Faffing is how you learn.
